Crypto artist Beeple auctions off NFT for charity – bid $1.5m
Digital art superstar Mike Winkelmann, also known by the nickname „Beeple“, is auctioning off a Non-Fungible Token (NFT) to support the Open Earth Foundation.
The NFT artwork is titled „OCEAN FRONT“. It features an image of trailers and shipping containers sitting on a platform on the water.
The painting is part of Beeple’s „EVERYDAYS“ series. It contains themes of environmental sustainability, the Bitcoin Superstar climate crisis and reducing the carbon footprint. It includes a caption that reads, „Together we can solve this“.
Carbon neutral NFT art
The carbon neutral NFT is up for auction at the Nifty Gateway marketplace. Proceeds will go directly to the Open Earth Foundation. Seven other nature-based NFTs by other artists will also be auctioned as part of the „Carbon Drop“ initiative.
Currently (time of this writing), the highest bid for the work „OCEAN FRONT“ was over $1.5 million. Bidding for all eight Carbon Drop NFTs currently totals $1.75 million. The auctions will close on 23 March.
The Open Earth Foundation is a non-profit organisation that…
„raises funds to develop innovative, open, digital infrastructures for improved management of planet Earth – helping to transparently track global progress on the Paris Agreement to avoid the existential risk of climate change.“
Beeple rises to fame
Although he has been creating artwork every day for more than a decade, Beeple only recently became known in the mainstream.
He rose to fame when an NFT mosaic of all his artworks was sold in an auction at Christie’s auction house. The piece was bought for the staggering sum of $69 million by a semi-anonymous collector named Metakovan.
The popularity of NFTs has exploded in 2021. Artists, celebrities, musicians and sports stars have all benefited from the boom.
The „NBA Top Shot“ NFTs have achieved the greatest success. Total sales have reached $416 million, according to CryptoSlam.
The Ethereum-based CryptoPunks characters (go to the Ethereum buy guide) have also seen a huge increase in value. More than $173 million has been generated, with a record $7.8 million for the single sale of Crypto Punk #7804.
